- Filmmaker and poet born in Semeni_kiai Lithuania in 1922. In 1944, Mekas was forced to leave his native Lithuania after he was found to be involved in the publication of an underground newspaper that was against the Nazi regime in Germany. Subsequently, he spent time in a German refugee camp before moving to New York in 1949. Since then, he has used the city as a base for his wide-ranging activities as an critic, programmer, distributor and archivist of independent films.
