Born 1969 in Tochigi
Based in Tokyo

Dancer, Choreographer.Yamada studied gymnastics, ballet and butoh and since 1996 has been performing and choreographing dance works. In the year 2000, she was awarded the French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographers in Yokohama Dance Collection Solo × Duo Competition, after which she visited France. In 2002, she established the dance company Co. Yamada Un and is currently active on stage throughout Japan and other Asian countries, as well as the Middle East and Europe with her diverse range of dance styles performed solos and in powerful group performances. She is involved in collaborations in different fields of activity including music, art, science and traditional arts, and also works on the choreography of routines for rhythmic gymnastics athletes and provides guidance on movement to theatre actors and opera singers. Her workshops geared towards people of all kinds and from all walks of life – young and old, able-bodied and the disabled – have attracted much public attention throughout the world. She won the 8th Japan Dance Forum Award in 2014 and the 65th Arts Advocacy Dance Section Education, Culture, Sports, Science Minister’s Newcomer Award.
At Aichi Triennale, she will create a new work taking as a motif “Hana Matsuri,” a ritual performance art that has been performed for more than 700 years in the Okumikawa region of Aichi Prefecture.
