TESHIGAWARA Saburo

[Director, Scenography/lighting/costume design]

Born 1953 in Tokyo

Dancer, choreographer, director. Teshigawara launched his creative practice in 1981. Since 1985, he and his company KARAS have been invited to perform in major cities around the world. Continually pursing new forms of creative expression that transcend the existing framework of dance, he is highly recognized worldwide both for his unique method of breathing-based dance and his singular creative works in which he himself handles lighting, set design, costumes, and music, qualitatively changing the space through light, sound, air, and body. In recent years he has been commissioned by a number of international companies including the Paris Opera Ballet and Teatro La Fenice in Venice to choreograph repertoire pieces and stage operas. His most recent creative endeavor – libretto, stage direction, choreography, set design, lighting, and costumes for the new opera Solaris commissioned by Théâtre des Champs Elysées – premiered on March 5 in Paris, with performances scheduled thereafter at the Opéra de Lille and Opéra de Lausanne.
