TAKEKAWA Nobuaki

Born 1977 in Tokyo
Based in Tokyo

Takekawa employs diverse strategies including two-dimensional and three-dimensional works and installation, addressing topics related to current social and political issues from the standpoint of his own identity. While focusing on serious and far-reaching problems to which any viewer can relate, he does so in a characteristically humorous manner, deploying subject matter such as milk cartons and tooth decay. While the orthodox technique of painting underpins his work, he seeks to build a new type of relationship between Western and Asian art with a perspective that is uniquely free from anthropocentrism, and has carried out such experiments as superimposing cicada life cycles on human history, and tracing epic sea voyages as well as the trajectory of creativity through the observation of organisms such as sea cucumbers and shellfish.
