The work of Mathieu Pernot can be placed in a tradition of a political art informed by history and sociology. The artist works in series that are a wide range of formal and analytical points of view on the questions of identity and history, progress and alienation. It manifest a transversal and polymorphous approach to the medium of photography tested by its use and its history.
The idea of crossing, of moving and of passage is a recurring image in his series. It is as incarnated by the nomadic and fragile existence of the people photographed – Gypsies, migrants, etc. His work offers a composition of a contemporary history incarnated by people living at its edge.
