Mark MANDERS

Born 1968 in Volkel, the Netherlands
Based in Ronse, Belgium

Mark Manders shapes spaces with objects based on motifs such as people, animals, and furniture. It brilliantly conveys relationships of death, stasis, and absence, seeming to take as its point of departure the morphological remnants of something that was once there, once lived, or once moved. Through simultaneous, multilayered presentation of intermediate states, Manders’s work renders visible a temporal and situational suspension between life and death, the dynamic and the static, living creatures and sculpture as well as sculpture and the self. As viewers look at the works, they are gradually overtaken by the bewildering yet bewitching sense that they are wandering lost in the maker of creator’s studio.
