Lois PATIÑO

Born 1983 in Vigo, Spain
Based in Madrid, Spain

Filmmaker and video artist. Studied psychology and cinema. Later continued his filmmaking studies in New York and Berlin, producing short videos and installations. His work has been shown, and specials focusing on his work have been organized, at film festivals and art museums around the world. His works all deal with the body, faces, life and death, and memory, involving exploring the landscape based on the theme of “time and space” and inquiring into the extent to which a given space is appreciated through the simple act of watching slowly over time.

In Estratos de la Imagen (Strata of the Image), inspired by the technique used by Clerk Maxwell to successfully produce the first color photograph, Lois Patiño considers the relationship between light and color, using a method that involves synthesizing video images and separating and desynchronizing the three layers of color (red, green and blue) as he addresses two temporal dimensions—the geological and the human–and reflects on the image. The landscape arises gradually as the accumulation of time condensed in the image.
