Jerry GRETZINGER

Born 1942 in Michigan, USA
Based in Michigan, USA

In the summer of 1963, Jerry Gretzinger began filling idle moments at work by doodling an imaginary city map, and he continued expanding it for the next 20 years. Afterward the map was stored away in his attic, but years later he began working on it again and it continues to grow, now consisting of over 3,200, 8 x 10-inch panels. The enormous, vividly colored and highly detailed map of an alternate world, executed in acrylic, marker, colored pencil, ink, collage, cardboard, and inkjet prints, has a breathtaking impact, and it is still growing gradually through Gretzinger’s magical mix of precise, complex rules for execution and purely fantastic structure. “Jerry’s Map” has thus far been exhibited many times in the United States, and in 2015 was featured in the group show Le Borde Des Mondes (Palais de Tokyo, Paris), making bold use of the entire exhibition space and enthralling viewers.
