HATA Satoshi

Hata Satoshi is an artist based in Sapporo, Japan. In 1995 he resided in Germany with support from DAAD (the German Academic Exchange Service), and since then has showed work in many solo and group exhibitions both in Japan and overseas. Known for large-scale video installations, Hata integrates physical material with images, probing deep into the meaning of existence. Recent works deal with themes such as the memory of water and the circulation of matter and energy, imaginatively engaging with theories of civilization and of the universe. He was involved with the Sapporo International Art Festival 2014 from the planning stages and served as Regional Director, contributing to the success of the city’s first international art festival. Hata is recognized not only for his own work but also for his tireless dedication to the cultivation and mentoring of emerging talent.
