A group of filmmakers formed in Seattle around Salise Hughes whose works fall between the cracks of traditional cinema, ranging from direct animation on film to experiments in digital media.
For the collaborative production The Spaces Between Cities, twenty international experimental filmmakers spread across four continents were each commissioned to create a single 2–5 minute work, resulting in a feature-length film set in North America, Europe, South America and Asia. Employing the cadavre exquis (exquisite corpse) technique invented by the surrealists, the filmmakers wove together a single story by relying on "prompts" for the beginning and ending of their contribution that were supplied to them in advance. The result is a playful experimental road movie in which the closing images of one work also signal the opening of a work created by another artist somewhere else in the world.
