Christophe GAUTRY

Born 1976 in Rouen, France
Based in Valence, France

After working as a computer engineer, studied screenplay writing at EMCA in Angoulême, France, and animated film directing at La Poudrière in Valence. Directed several short films while working for the prestigious French animation studio Folimage. His puppet animation La Vita Nuova (2008) won the Grand Prix of the French Community at Anima, the Brussels Animation Film Festival.

Vertige (2012, co-directed with Mathieu Brisebras) was made in conjunction with the Agency for Cultural Affairs’ “Animation Artist in Residence Tokyo 2010-2011” (A-AIR 2010-11) program, in which talented young animation artists from around the world are invited to Tokyo to work on individual projects while participating in cultural exchange activities in Japan. While visualizing an outsider’s sensibility by using pixilation, a technique in which humans are animated to look like puppets, the directors constructed a highly individual world in which the scenes with the friends they met in Japan also engender a playful sense of enjoyment.
