Asian Sounds Research
(project director: Sachiko M)

Launched 2014 in Tokyo
Active in Japan and Southeast Asia

Asian Sounds Research, a project centered on sounds, introduces research-based experiments and new expression, while discovering and creating unknown expression that lies somewhere between, yet exploits the characteristics of, music and art in Japan and Southeast Asia. It is one of the three activities of “Ensembles Asia” sponsored by the Japan Foundation Asia Center. The project's guiding principle is to carefully pursue new expression together with local people and places, and to archive the processes and discussions. Research has been conducted since 2014 in Penang, Malaysia, where in June 2015 the project's first “Open Gate” exhibition was held. The second round of research began in November 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, Cambodia.
During Aichi Triennale 2016, this research will come into full plan in their second exhibition and performance, OPEN GATE 2016, staged for the first time in Japan on the rooftop of Okazaki CIBICO.
