【Screening / Assembly】 Abstracted / Family
Abstracted / Family, 2019
Artist Tanaka Koki explores the possibilities and limitations of different people "being together" by constructing communities and then recording them. He has had a strong impact on the international art scene for some time, with work exhibited at the Venice Biennale and as part of Skulptur Projekte Münster.
At Aichi Triennale 2019, Tanaka will exhibit a new work that reconsiders people's backgrounds from the level of the family unit. The four unconnected "characters," who would not have met were it not for this project, are real people with their own complicated cultural roots and diverse backgrounds. The collection of conversations and acts woven together by these four people living together under one roof as a kind of coincidental "family" are somewhere between fiction and reality, and naturally leads the audience themselves to the question, "who are we?"
"Assemblies" will also be held, where visitors can appreciate this work as a group and engage in dialogue with the performers and guests. In Nagoya, the assembly will be held in the exhibition space in Nagoya, recorded, and incorporated into the work. At Toyota, the real world will be reconnected to the work organically and critically through discussions involving local high school students after screening.
Extension Projects:
Projects including lecture-style performances by artists participating in the international contemporary art exhibition, group appreciation of work, and the provision of venues for discussion.
TANAKA Koki
- Born 1975 in Tochigi, Japan
- Based in Kyoto, Japan
Through various methodologies such as documentary style video, installation work, critical writing, and also curating public talks and gatherings, Tanaka Koki explores the question of how people can share a past, present, or even future experience or events as one's own. He assembles temporary communities for his film and captures people's behavior including slippages and missteps; it unlock the very considerations to the social, the historical, and the institutional aspect of these human activities. In parallel to his artistic production Tanaka is vigorously developing his activities as a writer and speaker, following through on his critical intuition, which has led him to investigate the existing frameworks and institutions surrounding contemporary art, and to attempt to redefine them.
