A91

This documentary was broadcast in 2018, as a 60th anniversary program for Tokai Television, on Tokai Television Local, but there was a tremendous response from film and video producers across Japan. Tokai Television's documentary division closely tracked the station's own news division, and the camera captured raw footage giving a rare behind-the-scenes look at the realities of broadcast TV, addressing issues such as viewership ratings and journalism, labor, alienation, and past broadcasting incidents and accidents. Focusing on the announcers who serve as the "faces" of television stations, outsourced veteran staff reporters, and young fixed-term contract employees, the program documents the process of broadcasting and what happens day to day. Frequently showing incidences of dramatizing "news" for entertainment value, it calls into question how much is fact and how much is entertainment, and challenges the media literacy of viewers.

This television station, established in 1958, has its head office in Nagoya City and broadcasts in the greater Chukyo area encompassing Aichi, Gifu and Mie prefectures. Its documentary programs, featuring long-term, in-depth independent coverage of its subjects, have earned high acclaim in recent years. The station has carried out many ambitious projects in recent years, and the most recent series of 11 works, collectively called Tokai Television Documentary Theater, has been shown at theaters around Japan, without being released in digital form. Life is Fruity (2016), which documented an elderly couple living in the Kozoji New Town housing development in Kasugai City, Aichi, became a long-running national hit, and Yakuza and Constitution (2015) challenged the conventions of media expression and broadcast codes. The station continues independently expanding the possibilities of TV documentaries not produced by the dominant Tokyo TV stations.
