In 1967, the Detroit police department raided an unlicensed bar in the back of a ceremony in honor of black veterans returning from Vietnam. A rock thrown at the police eventually developed into a large-scale riot, and in the midst of it the "Algiers Motel incident" occurs. On the third night, when the rioting showed no signs of settling down, a motel full of young black guests was swarmed by a large number of police and the Michigan National Guard, who had heard a report of gunshots. The police began violently interrogating young people who happened to be at the motel. It is clear that racism underlay the unilateral "justice" dispensed by the police in the tense confines of the sealed-off room. At the same time, Detroit an ensemble production that depicts a single incident from multiple perspectives.

After graduating from San Francisco Art Institute, Bigelow studied film at Columbia University Graduate School of the Arts. Her best-known films include K-19: The Widowmaker (2002), based on an accident on a Soviet nuclear submarine in 1961; The Hurt Locker (2008), which depicts personnel in the US Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal team during the Iraq War and won a total of six Academy Awards including the first Best Director for a female director; and Zero Dark Thirty (2012), which caused a stir with its bold rendering of the narrative arc of a female CIA analyst obsessed with the hunt for Osama bin Laden. In recent years she has produced other films similarly based on actual historical events. With sequences of grippingly realistic scenes, she illuminates the way we judge good and evil in the most extreme situations.
