THE MYSTERY WE KEEP
New Wave (solo), VICTORI + MO, New York, USA, 2018
Each of the sculptures that are arranged inside the exhibition space is characterized by a unique repeated pattern. The sculptures' surface materials vary from smooth and fluffy to rocky and grainy, and in each case these materials are monochromatically colored.
The artist has created similar sculptures also in the past, whereas the patterns she usually employs are inspired by the technical musical training she has been receiving from a young age. In the field of music, various repeated sound patterns form one musical piece.
Since ancient times, sculptures have been created as graphical expressions of idealized natural formations in materials like rock or metal, while from the modern age and up to the present, sculptures are often abstractly shaped. In these works, the artist combines her own instinctive sensations with the textures of organic materials, to manifest abstract patterns in concrete physical shapes.
Amanda MARTINEZ
- Born 1988 in Greenville, South Carolina, USA
- Based in New York, USA
Visually representing musical plurality is an on-going approach that Amanda Martinez takes in her sculpture. Sculpture hand-carved from styrofoam, and coated in latex or enamel, reminds one of digital special effects. Her carvings start with a point of focus from which an identical motif fans outward, but are not systematically designed ahead of time. The artist herself tries as much as possible to use old technologies, simple science, and nature. From her specialist musical education, Martinez is interested in expressing music in an abstract form, deeply rooted in academic theory. She considers a physical and poetic relationship to the materials as an important part of her creative process.
