Song Dong's “穷人的智慧 : 借权园” recycles old furniture and parts of disused buildings to create a garden from traditional elements. Gardens are a symbolically controlled microcosm. The installation links two concepts: 'borrowing scenery' in traditional Chinese landscape design; and 'borrowing space', or right-of-way, to create more aesthetically pleasing or functional urban spaces. Over the last decade the artist has elaborated a third concept, 'the wisdom of the poor', suggesting how poor people (or nations) improve their lives by expanding their right to space and aesthetic satisfaction.
