Nicolas PROVOST

Born 1969 in Ronse (Belgium), based in Brussels.

Graduated in 1994 from the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium. Provost is a filmmaker working in a wide range of styles from short films that fit into the context of experimental film, to medium-and full-length theater movies, and video installations. His works are shown at many different venues, from international film festivals to art exhibitions. They are based on an intellectual approach that takes account of the grammar of cinema, making its structure evident in a way that results in viewers gaining a realization of what film is, and encouraging them to review their preconceptions. In more recent work such as 《Plot Point》 (2007) Provost experiments with found footage methods, using images drawn from past movies and reconstructing them in a different context from the original. He shoots and edits his own Hollywood-style footage to produce works with painstakingly created parody-like nuance. In Japan, he first showed two works at the Image Forum Festival in 2007, and then included a portfolio of 11 works in the Aichi Triennale 2010 film presentation program. The Aichi Triennale 2013 will screen three of his works: 《Plot Point》, 《Stardust》 (2010), and one of his most recent works, 《Tokyo Giants》 (2012), which is a trilogy shot in Tokyo as a re-cut of Japanese movies.
