LEE Bul

Born 1964 in South Korea, based in Seoul.

Lee has held solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Fondation Cartier pour l'art contemporain art in Paris, the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo and other leading art institutions. She often creates a sensation with the use of such tactics as performing in soft sculptures with the arms and legs of strange creatures, or exhibits replete with stench of decaying raw fish, in art works that often deal with power and oppression in South Korean society during the rapid transition from military dictatorship to democracy, and with the desires of ordinary people. She also stands out as an artist who gave physical form to a cyborg that melds elements of both the human and the mechanical, and to a monster with an extremely well-developed sense of touch. In recent years she has made reference to Bruno Taut and Vladimir Tatlin with her creations of model cities that shine brightly but seem to be about to crumble. Modern society is a place where politics and capital move unsteadily between reality and ideal, and it's very difficult for anybody to grasp a genuine self-image. Her art is like a mirror that reflects our pursuit of ideals that remain forever unattainable.
