Formed in 1997, based in the United States.
This unit operates on the borderline between art and architecture. Its members research perceptions of space from many different angles, and create works that take an object and present in a way that turns something very familiar into something very unfamiliar. As suggested by the name they give this, "architecture in reverse," what they actualize has no architectural function at all. To do this they take architectural structure back to its purest form and return us to its relationship with human perceptions. This effect is often achieved by combining radically different materials, like steel rods and textiles, or other things that can readily take on abstract forms. Located at the US-Canadian border, 《non sign II》 uses black steel lines to create a frame that references a highway billboard, but the middle where an advertising message would usually be is open. They won the American Academy in Rome's Rome Prize in 2008, and have participated in various exhibitions and given many lectures.
