Video artist, born 1937 in Niigata. On graduation from the Tokyo University of Education in 1960, moved to the United States, and remained in New York. In 1964 took part in the Fluxus movement. Also renowned as Nam June Paik's partner. While also providing support for Paik's work, used multiple TV monitors to create video sculptures in homage to Marcel Duchamp. Exhibited at Documenta 6 (1977). After Paik suffered a stroke in 1996, Kubota nursed him devotedly, and this video Sexual Healing documents his convalescence. Paik wrote in his memoir, My love, Nam June Paik, that Shigeko had extended his life by six years, those six years had been the best of his life, and therein, he would prove it.
