KATAYAMA Mari

Born 1987 in Saitama Prefecture (Japan), raised in Gunma Prefecture (Japan), based in Tokyo.

Katayama was born with tibial deficiency, which prevented her legs from growing normally. When she was nine years old, both legs were amputated, and she has used objects and photography from the time she was in her teens to express her feelings about her body, her situation, and her relationship with the world. She presents herself as an exhibit by putting on some artificial legs made for her when she was a little girl, and wears them with tiny high-heeled shoes, to create a highly personal and intimate self-portrait in a room of her own home, surrounded by things she uses regularly or has made herself. Other times she exhibits artificial legs that she has meticulously decorated herself, and sometimes gives experimental performances wearing high-heeled shoes especially made for use with prosthetics. Katayama was awarded the grand prize at the Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi 2012. She earned her master’s degree from the Department of Intermedia Art, Tokyo University of the Arts.
