HIRATA Goro

Born 1965 in Tokyo, based in Ibaraki Prefecture (Japan).

Completed his Master's in painting (mural) at Tokyo University of the Arts in 1990. Known especially for his architectural structures made from paraffin wax. Though formed from simple, unitary cubes and spheres, they are more than just minimally shaped sculptures. They offer spaces for people to enter and experience, interiors bathed in light that penetrates from outside, like prototype 'houses' that evoke a meditative response from the viewer. Has also undertaken some outdoor projects: in Hokkaido he constructed a house of snow and ice on a frozen lake, and on the Gulf of Alaska's eastern shores, he piled up stones to build 10 separate sculptures.
