Born 1956 in UK, based in London.
Cornelia Parker is one of the leading artists of her generation. For some years her work has been concerned with formalising things beyond our control, containing the volatile and making it into something that is quiet and contemplative like the 'eye of the storm'. She is fascinated with processes in the world that mimic cartoon 'deaths' – steamrollering, shooting full of holes, falling from cliffs and explosions. Through a combination of visual and verbal allusions her work triggers cultural metaphors and personal associations, which allow the viewer to witness the transformation of the most ordinary objects into something compelling and extraordinary.
Since 2000 her work has been the subject of solo exhibitions around the world, including Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, 2014; Thirty Pieces of Silver, York St Mary's, York (in association with Tate) 2011; Doubtful Sound, Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead and No Mans Land, Two Rooms, Auckland, New Zealand 2010; Never Endings, Museo De Arte de Lima, Peru 2008 and IKON, Birmingham 2007; Focus: Cornelia Parker, The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Fort Worth, Texas, 2005; New Work by Cornelia Parker, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, San Francisco, 2005; Württembergischer Kunstverein Stuttgart, Germany, 2005; GAM, Galleria Civica D'Arte Moderna, Turin, Italy, 2001; Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, USA; The Arts Club of Chicago, USA; ICA: Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia, USA, all in 2000; Serpentine Gallery, London, 1998.
