Alfredo JAAR

Born 1956 in Santiago (Chile), based in New York.

Alfredo Jaar uses photographs, video, architecture etc. to draw attention to social inequalities. His 《 Rwanda Project 》 of the 1990s is a typical example, the artist traveling to sites of the 1994 genocide to investigate the realities of the tragedy in person. Jaar's works are thus grounded in thorough analysis of the circumstances and background of actual events. Having completed this analysis, Jaar then poses questions on the social relationships that lie behind images and spaces. Through his works he reveals the system of language inherent in images, the task of reading these systems, and ultimately their deconstruction (what Jaar refers to as the "politics of images").
