A Day in the Aichi

  • ©️ Company Matsuo

A83

For over 30 years, since the age of 22, Company Matsuo has ceaselessly focused on "contradictions between heart/mind and body." With a hand-held camera, he set out to conduct one-on-one interviews with people related in some way to Aichi, where he was born and raised. In the process of recording a diverse and multi-faceted "portrait of Aichi" including both famous and unknown, old and young, he also documented emotions generated between those on opposite sides of the camera. Matsuo says human nature is not simply divisible into good and evil, and he has focused on depicting a world that is full of humanity and a mixture of humor and sadness. This film is the first new work commissioned for the Aichi Triennale video program. There were extraordinarily intense discussions leading up to its realization.

Company Matsuo

  • Born 1965 in Aichi, Japan
  • Based in Tokyo, Japan

After graduating from technical college, Matsuo went to work for a television production company, but it went bankrupt in one year. After scraping by with part-time jobs, he was invited in 1987 to join V&R Planning, and in 1988 he debuted as an adult video director. He drew attention with an innovative approach in which he was director, cameraman, and performer, and incorporated autobiographical fiction-style captions and rock music. Company Matsuo documents the paradoxical state of many people, who "want as animals, but love as humans." Human nature can never be reduced to one single, clearly explicable state. Matsuo's stance of baring himself completely and approaching his subject matter, while experiencing first-hand both deep-rooted, enduring prejudice and values that change depending on the era and region, is consistent in both his pornographic films and other works such as music videos and documentaries. He is an artist essential for examining aspects of Asian sexuality that clearly differ from the West.
