The Bacchae−Holstein Milk Cows

Ichihara Satoko writes and directs plays that deal with human behavior, the physiology of the body, and the unease surrounding these themes, using her unique sense of language and physical sensitivity. Her new work for Aichi Triennale 2019 is a fantasy that liberally interprets the themes and structure from the Greek tragedy The Bacchae (Euripides).
A seemingly ordinary housewife, her male pet dog, and a cow-human cross-breed born through artificial insemination, and a chorus of the souls of 12 female Holstein cows--the drama they act out blurs the boundary between people and animals, and stimulates our hidden desires in a tactile fashion. Here, the patriarchal, anthropocentric narrative of sexuality and reproductive behavior, and their associated ethics and morals are radically called into question.
Nukata Masashi, of Tokyo Shiokouji and Nuthmique, will be responsible for music. This piece has also been chosen for an official invitation to the World Theater Festival (held every three years) in Germany in 2020. The world is paying attention to the unusual musical theater produced by these modern Dionysian artists.

Ichihara Satoko has led the theater company Q since 2011. She writes and directs plays that deal with human behavior, the physiology of the body, and the unease surrounding these themes, using her unique sense of language and physical sensitivity. In one of her works, themes such as sex, cross mating and breeding are clinically portrayed through the viewpoint of women; the audience is showered with physically stimulating, verbal rampages and the actors execute their lines using their entire bodies--at times in the manner of caricature, at times in the manner of confession. Here, the patriarchal, anthropocentric narrative of sexuality and reproductive behavior is invalidated, and even the ethics and morals of the social majority are radically called into question.
