Five Easy Pieces

Director, playwright, film director, and journalist, Milo Rau has led the International Institute of Political Murder (IIPM) since 2007. IIPM's approach is to carefully investigate terrible incidents or historical events that occurred in reality, and to reconstruct them on the stage. As well as being a kind of accusatory re-enactment, their many works--woven together from sources such as testimony from both assailant and victim, and contemporary media and records--have a clearly designed politicality and aesthetic force, which compel the audience to consider and discuss further.
The work to be staged for Aichi Triennale 2019--the product of CAMPO (a theater in Ghent, Belgium) inviting Rau to create a piece with locally auditioned and cast children--is Rau's masterpiece, having won numerous awards at theater festivals around the world since its original performance. This work concerns a case of the confinement and murder of young girls that rocked Belgian society in the 90s. The performance, a re-enactment by seven children based on contemporary reports and testimony violently shakes the emotions of the audience. How can theater, as a potent social medicine, prompt us to consider reality through a horrific incident we would rather look away from?

The Swiss director and author Milo Rau (born 1977), artistic director of the NTGent beginning in the season 2018/19. Rau studied sociology, German and Romance languages and literature in Paris, Berlin and Zurich under Pierre Bourdieu and Tzvetan Todorov, among others. Since 2002, he has put out over 50 plays, films, books and actions. His productions have appeared at all of the major international festivals, including the Berlin Theatertreffen, the Festival d'Avignon, the Venice Biennale Teatro, the Wiener Festwochen and the Brussels Kunstenfestivaldesarts, and have toured more than 30 countries worldwide.
CAMPO

The Ghent based arts centre CAMPO presents a diverse program, ranging from theatre, dance and performance to festivals, neighbourhood kitchens and debates. They create performances which tour internationally, and support artists throughout their artistic process. CAMPO has three sites in Ghent to work and present: CAMPO nieuwpoort, CAMPO victoria and CAMPO boma, where ONBETAALBAAR, a collective of makers working around 'materialism with emotion', is based.
