Announced in Japanese on Aug 16, 2019
Translated and published in English on Aug 20, 2019
On August 7th, following the closure of the "After 'Freedom of Expression?'" exhibition, the Aichi Triennale Organizing Committee received a request from CIR (The Center for Investigative Reporting) to withdraw their artwork. We are currently in contact with CIR, and discussions are ongoing.
On August 9th, the committee received a request from Mónica Mayer to make alterations to her exhibit that would mark its temporary suspension. We are currently in discussions with the artist.
On August 13th, the committee received requests from eight artists (Tania Bruguera, Pia Camil, Regina José Galindo, Claudia Martínez Garay, Dora García, Reynier Leyva Novo, Ugo Rondinone, Javier Téllez) to suspend or alter their exhibits. Discussions are currently underway with each artist to decide how best to meet their wishes.
The committee has not received any particular requests from the other 80 artists (as of August 15th).
Although factors such as time difference and translation have slowed down communications, the Aichi Triennale Organizing Committee is doing its utmost to respect the wishes of all the participating artists.
More information on the outcomes of these discussions will follow in due course. The Aichi Triennale Organizing Committee has continued to engage in dialogue in order to overcome the present difficulties, and is investigating various approaches that were previously unavailable.
The Japanese version of Aichi Triennale 2019's theme has the word "jō" (情) at its heart. This character has three primary meanings, one of which is "truth" or "true nature." It is in keeping with this ethos that we will continue, with renewed vigor, to proactively communicate true information to you all.
